By road from the northwest
Follow the A55 expressway past Chester and Conwy towards Bangor. Turn off at Bangor/Bethesda exit, taking first left and then first right towards Llanberis. After 3 miles come to a roundabout and turn left. After another 3 miles (about 1 mile after a petrol station on the left) notice sign to left for Brynrefail. Keep going. A few hundred yards later look out for another sign to left marked Brynrefail and Fachwen (the Fachwen sign may be missing). Turn left. Within 50 yards come to T-junction and turn right. Another 100 yards there is a turning to the left to Fachwen. This is near an old bridge at the foot of Llyn Padarn.
By road from London or the Midlands
Head for the M54 towards Telford and Shrewsbury. This turns into the A5 which you follow through Llangollen, Corwen, Betws y Coed to Capel Curig. Turn left there towards Llanberis, through the mountains (very beautiful) and after five miles go right, up over the Llanberis Pass and down the valley. Bypass Llanberis driving along the edge of the lake. 2 miles later the road straightens out. You come to a main junction. Turn right (towards Bangor) then within 100 yards turn right again (opposite a sign for Brynrefail). The road goes left over the old bridge, then you turn right onto the Fachwen Lane.
Both directions come together here
The road leads up the hill beneath granite boulders and tall larch and pine trees over looking the lake. After passing a few houses about a mile up you'll come to a telephone box on your left. 100 yards later on the right under a lamp post is a small gold and green sign saying 'Cae Mabon' with an arrow pointing down hill. Here you have to do a three-point turn and head down the track on your right.
It's steeply down to start with but be bold and proceed steadily down in low gear. After a third of mile the track levels out, passing a cluster of buildings on the right, an old cottage on the left (currently being renovated), then it goes under a disused slate quarry bridge. Keep on for another two hundred yards and through an open gate. On the right is a large turning circle (known affectionately as the 'helipad'). The track continues straight ahead. Between the track and the helipad is the entrance to the new "Cae Mabon Car Park". You will see a sign for it.
Drive into the car park, using the lower level if it has space. Please park here. Then, following the signs, go under the Green Man and through the archway, over the little bridge, down the steps, along the wall and through the gate. The path leads down to the centre of Cae Mabon. It's about 250 yeards from the car park, a relatively easy downhill walk. Don't forget to have a torch with you if it's dark.
